Steve Gerber, probably best known for creating "Howard the Duck" and for his gloriously surreal run on "The Defenders", succumbed to health problems recently. Here are retrospectives from Mikester and Evan Dorkin. For my part, I hope that someday soon he becomes remembered as much more than "that guy who wrote that comic that godawful movie was based on." |

Awww. RIP Steve - I still think that first run of Howard the Duck is the high point of Marvel Comicsdom. I am sad.
By the time I started reading comics, Gerber had already become something of a fringe figure. Still, I enjoyed the stories of his that came my way. By the by, I recommend that you pick up "Nevada" from Vertigo Comics if you can. It's not considered one of his best works, but I consider it a lost classic.
Aw I loved that "Howard the Duck" movie...
Really? I think you're the first person I've seen/heard say/write that.
I didn't think it was awful per se - although God knows I've seen some horrendous cinema in my time - but it did have some problems with pacing and tone. Personally the fact that Lea Thompson's character is introduced via an attempted rape always struck me as a little bizarre, especially since they were trying to make it a PG-13 film...
I didn't get quite so analytical...I liked it because it was funny and pretty strange-insane. | |
